Matthew
20:20-28 - '20 Then the
mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling
down, asked a favor of him. 21
"What is it you want?"
he asked. She said, "Grant that one of these two sons of mine
may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom."
22 "You
don't know what you are asking," Jesus said to them. "Can
you drink the cup I am going to drink?" "We can,"
they answered. 23 Jesus said
to them, "You will indeed drink from
my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These
places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father."
24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with
the two brothers. 25 Jesus called
them together and said, "You know
that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high
officials exercise authority over them. 26
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants
to become great among you must be your servant, 27
and whoever wants to be first must be
your slave— 28
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give his life as a ransom for many." '
John
14:12-14 - '12
I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have
been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am
going to the Father. 13
And I will do whatever you ask in my name,
so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14
You may ask me for anything in my name,
and I will do it.'
Matthew
28:18-20 - '18 Then Jesus
came to them and said, "All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19
Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit, 20
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely
I am with you always, to the very end of the age." '
John
13:1-17 - '1 It was just
before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him
to leave this world and go to the Father. d his own who were in the
world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. 2
The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted
Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and
that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4
so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped
a towel around his waist. 5
After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples'
feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going
to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus
replied, "You do not realize now
what I am doing, but later you will understand." 8
"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."
Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you,
you have no part with me." 9
"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet
but my hands and my head as well!" 10
Jesus answered, "A person who has
had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And
you are clean, though not every one of you." 11
For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said
not every one was clean. 12
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and
returned to his place. "Do you understand
what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13
"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,'
and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also
should wash one another's feet. 15
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16
I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is
a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17
Now that you know these things, you will
be blessed if you do them." '
Luke
17:11-19 - '11 Now on his
way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria
and Galilee. 12 As he was going
into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance
13 and called out in a loud
voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" 14
When he saw them, he said, "Go, show
yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were
cleansed. 15 One of them, when
he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16
He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a
Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, "Were
not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18
Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"
19 Then he said to him, "Rise
and go; your faith has made you well." '
Hebrews
12:1-3 - '1 Therefore, since
we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw
off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,
and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,
who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that
you will not grow weary and lose heart.'
